business campaigning® – Made for Africa

I am on my way back from a 6 days trip to Kenya and if I would be asked describe this trip in a few words I would say „After 20 years of hard work trying to promote my business campaigning® model in Europe I finally found the fertile soil for it in Africa. It even seems to be made for Africa.» – How did that come? „business campaigning® – Made for Africa“ weiterlesen

Was heisst das genau?

business campaigning® in Washington D.C.

Last Friday the time had come. I ran Washington D.C.’s first campaign strategy workshop based on my business campaigning® model. The workshop was for a client of our partner agency turner4D. Most important tools were „Four Layers of Planning“, a strategy mindmap based on my strategy definition and a process that has proved to be successful since my first business campaigning® workshop, back in 1999.
Four Layers of Planning
It was a great pleasure to work with the turner4D team, their client and renowned experts like leading pollster Celinda Lake and former campaign manager David Hunter. The workshop was such a success (9in the eyes of Turner4D and their client) that we are considering applying it to a wider range of their and our joint clients. Looks like I’ll be back in the US soon 🙂

Strengthening Cooperation With Melbourne-Based NewmanMarshall

Last year in Melbourne I met Cate Newman Marshal from NewmanMarshall for the first time. She helped me with translations of basic terms in my book, as part of working on an English version of «Business Campaigning». Cate used to work in marketing for HSBC and now has her own consultancy in Melbourne. This week we started our first joint project together. A Swiss based international management school that has come under competition by American schools with their aggressive marketing asked us to review their English website and support them in making the text more attractive to possible students. I decided that NewmanMarshall would be the perfect partner in this project. Not only due to the English skills but also as Cate had been running international campaigns for HSBC and has the same strategic thinking that I have. As a quick fix we chunked a few pages on their website. Next step will be a bigger, more comprehensive project, during which we will support them in developing their Corporate Identity, based on our „listen first“ approach and competitive analysis. Only after that we will know which changes to the website have to be made. I am very excited about this first joint project with downunder. Another reason to go back to Melbourne again and again.

South Dakota

I am currently traveling in Colorado and South Dakota where friends of mine have an organization that supports Native American Indians on the reservations here with what they need for a living, Pathways To Spirit E.g. With money for propane in winter, but they also built a children’s library and started a straw bale houses project. The government houses are way too hot in summer, and in winter people sometimes freeze to death.

Pathways To Spirit put me on their advisory board four years ago, as I consulted them on their website and Fundraising strategy. I was impressed about their success, the stories they told me yesterday during breakfast in Boulder. They are great in taking action and managed to get supported by some of the most famous and wealthiest people on this planet, but communicating has always second priority. That is one reason, why e.g. their Facebook page is not actively being used. We are discussing ways to change this and use a more comprehensive approach. I’ll come back with more information after our trip to the reservations of South Dakota. As I am writing this I am in a motel in Valentine, Nebraska, right next to Rosebud Reservation, where we’ll stay with friends, camping on the prairie.

P.S. Thanks to my iPad which now has a US SIM Card I can be online even here. It is so good that you don’t have to depend on roaming anymore with an iPad and a prepaid SIM.

Back To Switzerland

I am currently having a stop over on my way from Melbourne to Switzerland. Before departure I got no more chance to write something. This time being in Melbourne was a more intense experience than the other times. Not only did I get a lot of work done and could still meet my friends and also make new friends (especially among the tango addicts of Melbourne). I had the goal to get to know people who are in the same business and who can help me to expand my agency’s business network to Australia. I got to know a Marketing coach (through a friend at his café), a Crisis Communication & PR consultant (he also manages a small Harley rental, where I rented a Harley), my publisher’s representative for Australia and New Zealand (at an AC/DC afterparty), who wants to help me with the English version of my book, the CEO of Whispir, an alert communication technology provider for Crisis Management and found out, that an old friend had started his own business with Personal Development, Fine Art Management and Strategic Consulting. All these people have a similar approach and share the same values as I do.

Working From Melbourne

St.Kilda Beach, watching the sunset and taking notes for a concept paper

Between 5th and 28th of February – right now – I am working from Melbourne. Melbourne is an awesome city, that I like a lot, and I have a number of really good friends here. I get to see them only if one of us travels around half the globe. After having been here for the first time in late 2006 / early 2007 I decided to try and come back every year. Not to make holidays, but to work from here and spend time with friends, in nature or at the beach during the evenings and weekends. In Melbourne I also had my first private tango lessons, and I am slowly starting to make friends there, too. Funny enough the world is so small, that I met herea tango friend from Zurich on Saturday night. None of us knew we were here at the same time…

When I tell people, especially back home in Switzerland,  that I am not here for holidays, they have a hard time believing me.
